WhatsApp DP Size

WhatsApp crops your display picture to a circle. Choosing the square yourself is the difference between a portrait and the top of your head.

Your file is processed on your device and is never uploaded.

What this tool does

  • Saves at exactly 640 × 640 pixels
  • You choose which part of the photo is kept
  • Runs on your device — nothing is uploaded

Frequently asked questions

Why 640 × 640?

WhatsApp stores display pictures as a square and shows them in a circle. 640 x 640 is the size it keeps, so supplying exactly that avoids both upscaling and a wasted large upload.

What should I keep inside the frame?

WhatsApp shows the picture as a circle and usually very small — often around 40 pixels wide in a chat list. Crop tighter than feels natural: head-and-shoulders framing that still reads at thumbnail size beats a full-length shot that becomes an unrecognisable smudge.

Why crop instead of just resizing?

Because the shapes rarely match. Resizing a 4:3 photo into a square either squashes it or leaves bars down the sides. Cropping lets you decide what to lose, which is the only way to get the right shape without distorting anyone’s face.

What if my photo is smaller than the target?

It will be enlarged to fit, and will look soft — enlarging cannot add detail that was never captured. The tool warns you when your selection is smaller than the target so you can pick a larger area or start from a better original.

Which format should I save as?

JPG. WhatsApp compresses display pictures hard on upload, so PNG buys nothing, and 640 × 640 as a JPG is a small file either way.
