Instagram Profile Picture Size

Instagram shows profile pictures as a circle cut from a square. Crop to the square first and you control what stays in frame instead of letting the app decide.

Your file is processed on your device and is never uploaded.

What this tool does

  • Saves at exactly 1080 × 1080 pixels
  • You choose which part of the photo is kept
  • Runs on your device — nothing is uploaded

Frequently asked questions

Why 1080 × 1080?

Instagram stores profile pictures as a square and displays them in a circle. Uploading 1080 x 1080 gives it the full resolution it will ever display, so the picture stays sharp on high-density screens. Anything larger is downscaled on upload.

What should I keep inside the frame?

Instagram masks the square to a circle, so the four corners — about a fifth of the area — are never shown. Keep the face or logo well inside the middle and leave headroom at the top: a crop that looks correct as a square often loses the top of the head once the circle is applied.

Why crop instead of just resizing?

Because the shapes rarely match. Resizing a 4:3 photo into a square either squashes it or leaves bars down the sides. Cropping lets you decide what to lose, which is the only way to get the right shape without distorting anyone’s face.

What if my photo is smaller than the target?

It will be enlarged to fit, and will look soft — enlarging cannot add detail that was never captured. The tool warns you when your selection is smaller than the target so you can pick a larger area or start from a better original.

Which format should I save as?

JPG. Instagram re-encodes every upload to JPG whatever you send, so a PNG only makes the upload bigger without arriving as a PNG. The exception is a flat logo with hard edges, where a PNG gives Instagram a cleaner source to compress from.
