Frequently asked questions
Why 2560 × 1440?
YouTube asks for 2560 x 1440 so one image can serve TV, desktop, tablet and phone. Each device shows a different portion of it, cropping inward from the edges — which is why the safe area is the middle 1546 x 423.
What should I keep inside the frame?
Only the middle 1546 × 423 is guaranteed to be visible — that is the strip a phone shows, and everything outside it is cropped away on smaller screens. Put the channel name and logo inside that safe area and treat the rest of the 2560 × 1440 as background that only television viewers ever see in full.
Why crop instead of just resizing?
Because the shapes rarely match. Resizing a 4:3 photo into a square either squashes it or leaves bars down the sides. Cropping lets you decide what to lose, which is the only way to get the right shape without distorting anyone’s face.
What if my photo is smaller than the target?
It will be enlarged to fit, and will look soft — enlarging cannot add detail that was never captured. The tool warns you when your selection is smaller than the target so you can pick a larger area or start from a better original.
Which format should I save as?
JPG or PNG, under 6 MB. PNG is worth the size here if the banner carries text or a flat-colour logo, because the banner is displayed large on desktop and JPG artefacts show around hard edges.
