Frequently asked questions
What happens to transparent areas?
JPG cannot store transparency, so transparent pixels are filled with a solid colour. White is used by default and you can change it before converting. If you need to keep transparency, convert to WebP instead.
When should I keep PNG instead?
Keep PNG for screenshots, logos, diagrams and anything with text or sharp edges — JPG compression puts visible haloes around high-contrast lines. JPG is the better choice for photographs.
How much smaller will the JPG be?
For a photograph, typically 70–90% smaller. For a screenshot or a flat-colour graphic the saving is much smaller, and the result may even be larger — PNG is genuinely better at that kind of image.
