Frequently asked questions
Why 820 × 312?
Facebook shows cover photos at 820 x 312 on a computer but only 640 x 360 on a phone, cropping in from the sides. Supplying the desktop size and keeping the subject centred is what survives both.
What should I keep inside the frame?
A phone shows 640 × 360 taken from the centre, so roughly 90 pixels are lost from each side. Keep anything that matters inside the middle two-thirds and treat the outer edges as decoration that only desktop visitors will see.
Why crop instead of just resizing?
Because the shapes rarely match. Resizing a 4:3 photo into a square either squashes it or leaves bars down the sides. Cropping lets you decide what to lose, which is the only way to get the right shape without distorting anyone’s face.
What if my photo is smaller than the target?
It will be enlarged to fit, and will look soft — enlarging cannot add detail that was never captured. The tool warns you when your selection is smaller than the target so you can pick a larger area or start from a better original.
Which format should I save as?
PNG if the cover carries a logo or text, JPG for photographs. Facebook re-compresses either way, but a PNG gives it cleaner edges to work from, which is what shows on lettering.
