Frequently asked questions
Why do images I save from the web open as WebP?
Most sites now serve WebP because it is meaningfully smaller than JPG at the same quality. Browsers handle it fine, but some desktop applications, older phones and government upload forms do not.
Will the JPG be larger than the WebP?
Usually yes, by roughly 25–35% for the same visual quality. That is the cost of the wider compatibility.
What about animated WebP files?
Only the first frame is converted, because JPG cannot hold an animation. For an animated image you will need a format that supports it, such as GIF or MP4.
