Compress a PDF to 500 KB

Aim at a hard 500 KB limit. Each page is re-rendered at a lower resolution until the document fits, and you see exactly what it cost.

Your file is processed on your device and is never uploaded.

What this tool does

Frequently asked questions

Why do I need a PDF under 500 KB?

500 KB is a typical ceiling for email attachments on restrictive corporate mail servers, and for uploads to job portals.

Can any PDF be compressed to 500 KB?

Most scanned documents of a few dozen pages reach 500 KB with quality that is fine on screen.

What will the document look like at 500 KB?

Most documents hold 120 or 150 DPI here, which reads cleanly on screen and prints acceptably. Page count decides it: a 40-page scan spreads the same budget across ten times as many pages as a 4-page one.

How does it reach the target?

Each page is re-rendered as an image at a chosen resolution and quality, then rebuilt into a new PDF. If the result is too big, the tool steps down to a lower setting and tries again, jumping further when it is a long way over. It stops at 72 DPI, below which body text stops being readable.

What if my PDF will not fit in 500 KB?

Check the page count first. Half a megabyte is generous for a short document and tight for a fifty-page scan, so splitting is usually more effective than pushing quality down further. If the file is mostly photographs, converting the pages to JPG and rebuilding is not going to beat what this tool already does.

Will the text still be selectable afterwards?

No. This method turns each page into an image, so text becomes part of the picture. That is the trade that makes large scans shrink dramatically. If you need selectable text and your PDF is mostly text already, it is probably close to its minimum size and compressing it will not help much.
