Compress a PDF to 200 KB

Aim at a hard 200 KB limit. Each page is re-rendered at a lower resolution until the document fits, and you see exactly what it cost.

Your file is processed on your device and is never uploaded.

What this tool does

Frequently asked questions

Why do I need a PDF under 200 KB?

200 KB is a common limit for supporting documents on exam and visa application portals.

Can any PDF be compressed to 200 KB?

A short scanned document reaches it with readable, if soft, text. Documents over about ten pages will struggle.

What will the document look like at 200 KB?

Usually 96 to 120 DPI for a short document. Body text is comfortable on screen and thin lines soften. It will print, but noticeably rougher than the original.

How does it reach the target?

Each page is re-rendered as an image at a chosen resolution and quality, then rebuilt into a new PDF. If the result is too big, the tool steps down to a lower setting and tries again, jumping further when it is a long way over. It stops at 72 DPI, below which body text stops being readable.

What if my PDF will not fit in 200 KB?

Split it. At 200 KB the limiting factor is almost always page count rather than any single page, so extracting the pages that matter gets you there when quality settings will not. A scan made at 600 DPI is also worth re-scanning at 300 — you cannot recover what a compressor throws away, but you can avoid creating it.

Will the text still be selectable afterwards?

No. This method turns each page into an image, so text becomes part of the picture. That is the trade that makes large scans shrink dramatically. If you need selectable text and your PDF is mostly text already, it is probably close to its minimum size and compressing it will not help much.
